In sea salt tears

Artist in residence and exhibiton October 2015 - Studio Kura, Itoshima JAPAN

In sea salt tears is a series of work made in response to a months' residency at Studio Kura, Itoshima.  Studio Kura is located in Itoshima, within bike riding distance to the Genkai Sea.  Throughout this residency I would explore this area  - informally mapping out the environment I found myself in.

The works created reference these explorations and mimic the work of European naturalists to catalogue and collect.  Sand collected from the beach is used with sumi ink and salt to 'draw' out imagined currents linking the Genkai Sea to the sea I swam in as a child in Australia.  Spider webs were spraypainted and attached to carved wooden drawings - similar to the fishing nets I saw laid out against the water.
