Materials matter
In many ways, materials are the teacher within the art classroom. The ones we choose for learners each carry a unique voice. The voice of a pencil is not the same voice heard from a thread of twine. Each material invites different movements and responses, offering new pathways to explore. The feel, smell, texture, color, and shape of materials create endless opportunities for sensory and creative engagement. They don't just influence the outcome of a piece—they open up discovery and play.As educators, we must work with materials ourselves to understand their potential. By respecting their inherent qualities and inviting learners into deep, open-ended engagement, we can foster meaningful and joyful creative learning.
